The Young Heroes Initiative

Canyon Young Heroes – this is Canyon's way of supporting young talent. Talented young riders can apply in Koblenz and become a member of the team. As a Young Hero you continue to ride for your local club but receive the material from Canyon. A Canyon Ultimate CF SL 9.0 as a Young Heroes Edition.

In 2008 15 talented racing cyclists aged between 15 and 16 succeeded for the first time in convincing the tough jury of the Canyon Young Heroes-Initiative. The eleven male and four female talents started the first season with first-rate pro equipment sponsored by the Koblenz-based bike manufacturer. In 2009 the initiators also remained on the lookout for new talents because Canyon's programme of promoting young talent is long-term one. A current list of all the Canyon Young Heroes is available in the team overview.

The renowned Ultimate CF SLX frame forms the platform with which the riders of the professional Katusha Team and Movistar Team compete, among other things, in the spring classics and big stage races.

Interview with Canyon CEO, Roman Arnold

Canyon – cycling – passion. These three terms are closely linked to one another. The Canyon Young Heroes initiative from Canyon was launched in 2008 and back then 15 talented young riders made it onto the team. Since then the initiative has increased in popularity and every year increasing numbers of young riders aged between 15 and 16 years have applied for a place on the Young Heroes team. In an exclusive interview company founder and CEO Roman Arnold explains why the Canyon Young Heroes are so close to his heart.

The Canyon Young Heroes Initiative has been running since 2008. What is this programme all about?
Roman Arnold: Pro sport is a major part of what Canyon does. We work together with the world's top cyclists in various disciplines. The Canyon Young Heroes is an initiative which we regard as an investment for the future. The aim of this initiative is to support young talent in bike sport and thus lay the foundations for potentially successful pro careers in the future. We offer the young riders a complete package of top class equipment and professional support.

What is exactly behind the term "Young Heroes"?
Roman Arnold: Our Young Heroes are young riders of varying nationalities aged between 15 and 17, who normally receive sponsorship from their parents. A racing season is strenuous and costly because travel to the events, entry fees, clothing and wear and tear parts can punch a big hole in a family budget. Since 2008 we have been offering places on the team and thus giving talented young riders the chance to ride an entire season with professional support. As a Canyon Young Hero the riders continue to compete in their home clubs while receiving equipment and support from Canyon. The highlight of the season is the pre-season training camp with the team as well the team's participation in the Young Classics event in Hamburg, Germany.

What material do the Young Heroes compete on?
Roman Arnold: The Young Heroes ride a Canyon CF SL in the Young Heroes edition. This is the same material with which our World Tour pro team competes in the big international events.

What is the big difference to other sponsors?
Roman Arnold: We offer the young riders much more than just material. They experience the amazing world of bike sport with us and enjoy the best possible support as well as having a superb opportunity to develop their talent even further in familiar surroundings.

Just how important is the Young Heroes team to Canyon?
Roman Arnold: The Young Heroes are an integral part of Canyon's philosophy. The young talents are our future and it is a joy for us to be able to support them en-route to a future pro career. For me the project is something which is very close to our hearts. We are very proud of the Young Heroes and are looking forward to supporting even more talented young riders in the future.
