Use of Shadow Plus and Type 2 Derailleurs

The new rear derailleur Shadow Plus
doesn’t just reduce irritating chain
slap, but also facilitates trouble free
emoval of the back wheel.

Tip:

Generally it’s easier to fit and re-
move the rear wheel if the chain is on
the smallest sprocket of the cassette.

Shimano Shadow Plus Derailleur

1. In order to fit and remove the rear
wheel quickly and easily you actuate
a small lever which is located at the
top end of the derailleur cage of all
Shadow Plus rear derailleurs. If you
turn the lever to the “off” position,
the tension on the derailleur spring is
reduced, thereby allowing the entire
derailleur to be moved more easily. It
is now much easier to fit or remove
the rear wheel. Picture 1

2. After you have refitted the rear
wheel, you return the small lever to
the “on” position. Picture 2 This increases the
tension on the derailleur spring and
thus reduces unwanted chain slap.

Sram Type 2 Derailleur

The new rear derailleur “Type 2” from
SRAM doesn’t just reduce irritating
chain slap, but also facilitates trouble
free removal of the back wheel.

1. Push the derailleur cage forward
to slacken off the chain tension. You
now hold the derailleur cage in this
position and actuate the cage lock
button. Picture 3

2. The rear derailleur is now locked
in this forward position and the chain
tension is therefore greatly reduced.
The rear wheel can now be fitted
and removed much more easily. By
pushing the derailleur cage forward
slightly the cage lock is deactivated
and the derailleur cage moves back
into its standard position. Picture 4
