True racers need truly special bikes. But which one? MountainBIKE magazine asked this question and tested the 14 best racing rockets. Canyon went into battle with the Grand Canyon CF 9.0 LTD and the bike gave the opposition a real kick up the backside and impressed with the overall mark "very good".
The very light frameset and the very light and premium components enabled the bike to perform at an extremely high level in the sprints, up and downhill stretches and lab tests. "The Canyon displays an air of technical elegance with its stiff, large-volume down tube and the contrasting delicacy of the seat stays, which guarantee increased comfort. The abilities of the Grand Canyon CF 9.0 LTD become obvious when climbing. What about steep uphills on rough ground and long gravel stretches? This bike can cope with both! It bombs off passionately with its ultra stiff chassis and the agile DT carbon wheels. Even on extremely steep climbs the rider has sufficient traction on both wheels thanks to the long top tube (603mm) and the 73° seat angle".
In the test lab the Grand Canyon CF 9.0 LTD really did come up trumps. It wasn't just the extremely light DT SWISS XRC fork weighing in at 1180g that was the bee's knees, but also the light and stiff Grand Canyon CF frame was able to score high in the areas of bottom bracket and head tube stiffness.
Then it was the turn of the road tests. The wider handlebar from Syntace makes the Grand Canyon CF handle very well even on difficult passages. This opinion was also shared by the testers of the magazine. "The Canyon's directional stability scores high on tricky terrain (...). The tangible comfort offered by the bike overall is most worthy of praise".
At the end of the test it was then time for the award of points. Here the bike received 4/5 points for its ride performance, 5/5 points for the components and the final verdict was therefore "very good".
The Grand Canyon CF 8.0 also offers an outstanding alternative to the top of the range model. The testers wrote, "Anyone interested in this bike will at the latest be delighted when they see the price tag. The bike is equipped with SRAM's X0 groupset and the same stiff frame as the expensive MB test bike. All this combines to make this bike the absolute bee's knees.
Verdict: Thanks to the directional stability and above average climbing ability this bike is above all recommended for marathon riding.
