COMPACT DRIVE\n

STANDARD, COMPACT OR TRIPLE

Just a few short years ago the compact crank was an insiders secret but, today it is an established alternative to a standard or triple crank set depending on the riders usage.. Unlike triples, they don’t have the image problem of being seen as less sporty. For 2007 we are offering even more options than ever before. With the exception of our full-on race bikes, you are given the option of choosing a compact crankset - with many other models in addition to a triple crank. The only question is... what are the differences of the different systems, and what is this the correct choice for you? First – from the point of view of physics – whatever crank type you choose, the total work that you have to do will be the same. The end result comes from a combination of power, pedaling style or cadence, and exactly how fast (or easy) you want to go... this is exactly where your individual decision will come from.

If you are still unsure about which crank to choose we are happy to help you.

Standard / Double: You are a racer and have used this combination for years and have no difficulties using the standard option to manage to maintain a good cadence using a 39 chainring, even on steep climbs; perhaps the area you ride does not have steep hills or mountains, yet you like to give it some gas on the descents, to gain valuable seconds. Is it only when you cross the finish line at over 50km/h that feel it was even worth getting on the bike? A standard crankset with 53/39 rings is the logical answer.

Compact: Sprinter… climber… or classics rider… Do you belong to one of these categories? When you climb do you want to get to the top having used your power economically? When you are on the flats riding into the wind, would you like to continue to pedal smooth circles yet really give it some gas when you have the protection of the group? Can you forgo the maximum speed in the sprint and would you like the benefits of lower weight (compared to a double or triple) and more ergonomically advantageous q-factor (compared to a triple)? Additionally, do you place great value in the precision of the shifts and an optimal chain line? By the way… the compact crank can accept larger chain rings if needed at a later time.

Triple: You would like to have all options when riding different terrain. Variety is what you really want. No matter how steep the mountain may be… with the triple crank you are prepared for everything and anything.
