Rory Sutherland's Giro Journal, Part 3
The final week of a Grand Tour is when it can all start to fall apart for some. For others, it’s now that they truly begin to hit their stride. Despite riding strongly for the entirety of the Giro so far, Movistar Team still face an uphill task if Nairo Quintana is to finish the race in the Maglia Rosa.
Ahead of them lie multiple mountain tests of varying severity, from the palatable to the ridiculous. Movistar Team can press home their advantage when the gradients rise; out of all the main contenders, they have the strongest climbing line-up. What remains to be seen is how much time they can pull out before the final stage time trial in Milan.
Poaching seconds won’t do the job. Quintana needs minutes to regain the lead and then build enough of a buffer over his competition. The 100th Giro d'Italia hangs finely in the balance, and Movistar Team are relishing the challenge ahead.
