Number Five

Like the blooming of spring across the Ardennes each April, there are certain events that go unquestioned in the cycling season. Over the past four years Alejandro Valverde has stamped his authority all over La Flèche Wallonne, and at the age of 37 he shows no signs of slowing down whatsoever.

The sight of Valverde pushing on with his Ultimate CF SLX as the competition drops away up the lactic acid-inducing grades of the Mur de Huy has become a fixture of the classics in recent years. A bunch sprint in slow motion, raw power is essential to success here, but even more crucial is knowing when to time your effort perfectly. This is a place where experience trumps watts.

Since 2014, Valverde has been King of the Mur, and this year he stands on the brink of an unprecedented five-in-a-row.

Buena suerte, Alejandro.
