Valverde takes on first Giro d'Italia
Without the 2014 Champion, Nairo Quintana, on the starting line, Movistar Team will this year look to dress a different rider in pink. Alejandro Valverde will take up the gauntlet and with the support of an experienced squad and a great early season behind him, his chances look good. #BalaRosa
From the 6th to the 29th of May, Movistar Team will have a single mission: #BalaRosa. Alejandro ‘Bala’ Valverde will look to follow up Nairo Quintana’s 2014 result by winning the Giro and bringing the legendary Maglia Rosa back to Spain.
Having finished third in last year’s Tour de France, Valverde is feeling confident going into the Giro. “My approach to the Giro has been perfect. We’ve trained well and ridden everything we wanted to – even winning some big races.”
Surprisingly this will be Valverde's first time lining up at the Giro. The fact that he will be in contention for the Maglia Rosa in his first attempt at the race doesn’t bother the experienced Spaniard.
”I’m so glad to be racing the Giro for the first time. We’ll give our very best: Me and the whole of Movistar Team.”
Specialists for every terrain
From the flat, twisting roads of the Netherlands to the high mountain passes in Italy, Movistar Team’s Giro squad is well balanced and ready for any kind of racing. Andrey Amador was fourth in last year’s race and will serve as Valverde's domestique this year.
Jasha Sütterlin and Rory Sutherland are strong rouleurs for the flat stages, while José Herrada, Javi Moreno and Carlos Betancur will take over on the climbs. In José Joaquin Rojas and last year’s winner of the blue jersey, Giovanni Visconti, Valverde can count on two of the most experienced all-rounders in the peloton
