Aarhus - European Capital of Culture 2017

01-12-2016, CANYON

Countdown to 2017

In under 100 days, Aarhus will become a European Capital of Culture for 2017.

It was time to unveil the full programme for Aarhus 2017 and the spectacular launch event took place at the Aarhus Theatre, just a short ride from the Concert Hall where I work.

We have all been preparing for this launch for years, which is why it was fantastic to experience a programme featuring a dazzling array of international talent from Scandinavia, Europe and beyond, bringing global culture to Aarhus for the entire year.

Under the banner of ‘Let’s Rethink’, Aarhus 2017 challenges the world to use art and culture as a means to explore the choices we must make for our future. It features artistic developments, international collaborations, education and knowledge –and the transformation of a city’s self-understanding.

In my opinion, the year is a unique experiment in how art and culture can step out of its bubble and become an asset for society in a larger sense, a sort of sanctuary, where the community takes a deep breath and rethinks itself in its entirety as well as in its individual parts.

At the Concert Hall, we have chosen to “rethink” by doing what we are good at - in a new way. We rethink our role in cultural life by producing Oscar-winning Danish director Susanne Bier’s celebrated film trilogy; Brothers, After The Wedding and Open Hearts. They are being re-imagined as opera, dance and musical. Choreographer Wayne McGregor and the Paris Opera Ballet are interpreting US novelist Jonathan Safran Foer’s book “Tree of Codes” together with music composed by Jamie xx and scenography by Olafur Eliasson. A concert with the world famous pianist and conductor Daniel Barenboim and his legendary West-Eastern Divan Orchestra is a part of our programme too, a project aimed at celebrating freedom, equality and coexistence through music.

It is ambitious, it is about pushing the limits and expanding the field of our work. The title European Capital of Culture (ECOC) represents one of the most prestigious and prominent cultural events in Europe. 2017 is a kind of test for us and for Aarhus. We hope you can join us!
