T R A N S L A T E : Canyon Nerve AL 9.0
German “bike” magazine put eight full-suss trail bikes with 120 mm travel and 27.5” wheels to the test, each costing around €2500. The Nerve AL 9.0 came away with the honours!
German direct distributors, Canyon, have completely redesigned their classic Nerve AL for 2014, keeping the same 120 mm suspension travel but giving it a new frame layout and speccing 27.5” wheels. In our test lab, the Canyon was the only frame to weigh in under 3 KG. What’s more, it’s stiff and the surface has good impact protection.
Seeing as the Nerve is aimed at enthusiastic trail riders, the more aggressive riding position makes perfect sense. So too do the light wheels (yes, these do exist even for 27.5”!) and Schwalbe tyres with Pacestar compound. No other model on test feels this agile on the climbs and you don’t even have to ride with the suspension locked out, which greatly improves comfort and traction.
On the downhill of our test loop the Nerve AL shows no weaknesses, remaining stable and composed, yet nimble on singletrack sections. The vario-seatpost provides even more control.
The Nerve AL 9.0 doesn’t just look great in reality and on paper with its top-level spec – it rides superbly as well. It sets the benchmark in this category.
