What’s so special about a gravel bike with disc brakes?

Gravel bikes are the ultimate all-rounders in terms of unlimited riding fun. They’re built for efficient progress over gravel, forest paths and asphalt. Thanks to the geometry of the frame and wide tyres, a gravel bike absorbs all the lumps and bumps so you can continue having a great time.

Hydraulic disc brakes further add to a gravel bike’s CV. In wind and during poor weather, a disc brake setup promises a lot of flexibility and security. Gravel bikes are made for long adventures yet they’re still comfortable to ride. When it comes to speed and braking, you needn’t compromise.

Rim or disc brakes on a gravel bike?

Rim brakes have dominated cycling for decades. However, the braking efficiency decreases in wet weather and on loose surfaces.

A gravel bike with hydraulic disc brakes have a greater braking efficiency than rim brakes. Thanks to the rotors, you can have a greater tyre clearance and there is less wear and tear on the wheel rim. Disc brakes have proven themselves for years on mountain bikes in demanding terrain. Other advantages include:

  • Greater modulation when braking on and off-road
  • Constant braking performance and reliable braking in all weather conditions
  • Higher braking power and shorter braking distance
  • Increased wheel and frame stability and rigidity thanks to thru axles
  • Brake pads are easily replaced in a couple of simple steps

What are the features and characteristics of a gravel bike?

he geometry of a gravel bike is characterised by a long wheelbase and low bottom bracket. These features ensure high directional stability, excellent climbing on steep gradients and more stability on rough terrain. Other features and benefits include:

  • Frame material: Whether it’s aluminium or carbon, all Canyon gravel bikes with disc brakes benefit from the expertise of our developers. Canyon designs bicycle frames for the highest demands of racing. Carbon frames in particular are known to absorb shocks well.
  • Handlebars: A drop handlebar with a shorter stem is typical for a gravel bike. Both comfortable riding on the hoods and streamlined riding in the drops are possible. The double-decker handlebar of the Canyon Grail offers greater ergonomics, multiple hand positions and space for all your gadgets.
  • Gravel tyres: With a width of 37 to 50 millimetres, gravel tyres have a higher volume than cyclocross tyres and road bike tyres. Gravel tyres can be ridden with less tyre pressure. They absorb shock that’s reminiscent of built-in suspension which gives greater comfort and better handling.
  • Gravel gears: Component manufacturers have developed special gravel groupsets to fit the demands of gravel bikes. Systems such as the SRAM XPLR or Shimano GRX combine road bike performance with MTB robustness.
