Gravel racing is changing – and so are gravel bikes

What began as a more adventurous and explorative alternative to road cycling has matured into a high-performance discipline of its own. And as the sport has evolved, in order to keep up, so too have the bikes.

The rise of competitive gravel racing 

Gravel is now more than two decades into its rise and with races like Unbound, The Traka and the UCI Gravel World Championships firmly established, gravel racing has become one of cycling's fastest-moving categories.

Materials and construction practices have developed along with our understanding of speed on rougher terrain and gravel bikes are now lighter, faster, stiffer and more aerodynamic than their all-terrain predecessors.

Why not all gravel bikes are built for the same purpose 

Even within our ATR team, athletes racing across every surface and every distance – from explosive, full-gas races lasting a few hours to multi-day, remote self-supported adventures – the demands on both bike and rider are totally different. And so, gravel bikes come in many forms, each designed with distinct purpose in mind.

Geometry: aggressive efficiency vs all-day comfort 

A slightly shorter reach, taller stack height and more relaxed geometry place the rider in a more upright position to reduce strain on the back, neck and shoulders during long days in the saddle. Longer wheelbases and slacker steering also improves stability, particularly when the bike is loaded with luggage or tackling rough, technical terrain.

Weight: performance vs load-carrying capability 

Alongside lightweight carbon and aluminium frames, adventure-focused designs prioritise versatility, which often makes a small weight penalty a worthwhile trade-off. Frames and forks are also designed to support luggage, water and equipment without compromising handling.

Adventure gravel bike rides usually demand more than just the essentials, and food, clothing, camping gear and supplies can quickly add up. Multiple frame, fork and top tube mounting points allow riders to fit additional bottle and cargo cages, bags, racks and mudguards.

Tyre choices and terrain priorities

There’s a direct correlation between tyre size and just how rough the terrain your bike can handle and adventure gravel bikes will accommodate tyres well over 50mm. The additional volume provides greater comfort, traction and puncture resistance on rough tracks, rocky trails and remote routes.

Component specifications for different riding goals

Adventure gravel bikes favour components selected for durability, comfort and versatility. Wider gear ranges make steep climbs with loaded bikes more manageable, while robust aluminium wheels, flared handlebars and compliant cockpit components help improve comfort over time in the saddle.

When a bikepacking-focused gravel bike may be a better fit 

But ultimately any bike is only as good as it fits the needs of the rider, and as fast and advanced as the Grail may be, a race-focussed gravel bike won’t be for everyone.
