Grand Canyon CF SLX 8.9

World of MTB 05/13

Twelve hardtails in the 2000 Euro price range were put through their paces by World of MTB magazine. The hands down test winner was the Grand Canyon CF SLX 8.9, which impressed the testers above all with its innovations in frameset design.

The upgraded 2013 frame is equipped with innovations which really keep pace with trends and have partially never been seen before. The IPU, which protects the top tube from damage in a crash, is an outstanding piece of engineering. The special stopper is fixed on the top of the top tube and the counter piece is attached to the headset. Press-Fit bottom bracket, X-12 thru-axle, internally routed cables and RockShox-SID-RL fork: The equipment on the Grand Canyon CF SLX 8.9 29er is significantly better than what is standard in this price category. On top of that, the weight of just 10.5 makes the Grand Canyon CF SLX 29 simply unassailable in this test. On the downhill the Canyon is nippy, agile and boasts very direct steering.

Verdict: Canyon has raised the bar extremely high with the Grand Canyon CF SLX 29 extremely high. Hitherto unseen innovations on the frameset should be an incentive for other manufacturers to try even harder.
