What affects the weight of an e-bike?
It’s one of the most common questions bike shops hear – how much does an electric bicycle weigh?
In short, it depends on a range of factors. These are the key ones:
The battery weight varies depending on its size and performance
E-bike motors have different weights depending on manufacturer and model
The frame material makes a big difference – aluminium frames are often heavier than carbon frames, which are the lightest weight e-bike frames
The bike’s components (wheels, suspension, etc) also affect weight. Generally, higher-end parts are lighter than entry-level ones
How does e-bike weight affect day-to-day riding?
In terms of riding, the weight of e-bikes plays a minor role. In terms of handling the differences are small, even between bikes weighing 18 kg or 22 kg, for example. However, the extra weight does make a difference to the
– how far the bike can go on a single charge. The lower the weight of rider and bike, the longer distances a single charge can take you. So, it still makes sense to choose a lighter e-bike when possible.
Having a lighter bike also helps if you have to carry it. If you regularly take your bike on the train for commuting, or carry it up the stairs into your flat, having a lighter bike can make your day-in-day-out routine much easier and more comfortable.
Is there an industry standard for weighing e-bikes?
In short, no. There are different types of protocol, varying between manufacturers. Some manufacturers weigh bikes with the battery fitted, some without a battery at all. So, when it comes to bicycle weight, it’s always worth taking a look at the product information or the detailed manufacturer specs.

How much do e-bike batteries and motors weigh?
E-bike batteries and motors have a range of different weights, varying according to design and performance.
E-bike battery performance is measured by capacity in Wh (watt hours). The more Wh a battery has, the more power it can hold – but the heavier it will be. Modern e-bike batteries weigh between 1.4-5 kg.
Different e-bike motor models have different stated weights. Generally, they weigh between 1.3 and 5 kilos.
Fazua batteries and motors – weight
Fazua are a well-known manufacturer of e-bike motors and batteries. Their products are known for being some of the lightest weight e-bike systems around.
Their drive systems are built into the bicycle’s bottom bracket area, delivering background assistance with a solid 55 newton-metres of torque, all at a weight of only 1.3 kg.
The 250 and 252 Wh batteries weigh 1.9 and 1.4 kilograms respectively.
Shimano batteries and motors – weight
Since e-bikes first hit the market, Shimano have consistently been at the forefront of e-bike motor and battery technology. Their
E8000 and EP8 systems
are extremely popular, and lightweight too.
The EP8 motor only weighs 2.6 kilograms and can be combined with Shimano e-bike batteries weighing between 3.15-3.7 kg.
The Shimano E8000 motor weighs in at 2.8 kg and can be combined with a 3.05 kg battery.
Bosch batteries and motors – weight
Bosch are another leading manufacturer of e-bike drive systems. The new Bosch Performance Line CX motors are extremely powerful and lightweight too – weighing in at only 2.9 kg. Bosch has a range of powerful batteries which weigh between 2.8-3.9 kg.
