Grand Canyon AL 6.0
Outstanding - Test winner

Mountainbike 04/09 (model 2009)

  • Premium frame
  • Wise choice of components
  • Well balanced handling

The best frame was the cornerstone of the test victory.

There is cut-throat competition in the under 1000 Euro price range and the manufacturers are bringing in the value for money big guns. The Grand Canyon AL 6.0 is one of those big guns. The aluminium hardtail, benefits from the results of the latest Canyon research, because this bike - like all the others in the Canyon AL range - is equipped with the completely new aluminium chassis. This also impressed the testers of the magazine Mountain Bike:"Canyon really is setting new benchmarks with the newly designed frame: It weighs in at under 1500 grammes and is nevertheless extremely stiff and guarantees a noticeable level of comfort thanks to the refined seat stays and the 27.2 seat tube. Internally routed, rattle-free cables and the Post Mount standard for the rear brake are just some of the other details this frame has to offer."

So far so good, but even the best frame in the world is sadly lacking unless it is equipped with the right components and this is especially important in the under 1000 Euro price range. This was also noticed by the testers: "The equipment can't be regarded as premium, but is well thought out right down to the last detail and the responsive Reba SL from Rock Shox works really well. In short, the blend of different components works."

When one considers all this it's then not difficult to work out why this bike is such a great ride on the trails. The Mountain bike has gone successfully from theory into practice: "The lightest bike shows the competition a clean pair of heels on the trails: The playful handling as well as the sporty seat position both equally contribute to transmitting all the power of the rider into pure forward propulsion.

"The Grand Canyon totally slaughters the competition and proves that a good bike is more than just the sum total of its components."
