Compatibility of disc brakes

Fixing the brake caliper to frame and forks

IS2000

On this older standard the fixing bolts for the brake caliper are at right angles to the direction of travel. Bild 1 Bild 2 The distance between the fixing bolt holes for the brake caliper is 51 mm.

Postmount

On this standard the fixing bolts for the brake caliper are parallel to the direction of travel. Bild 3 Bild 4 On Postmount the distance between the fixing bolt holes for the brake caliper is 74 mm.

Fixing the brake disc to the hub

Six-hole fixing

This standard is used by the majority of manufacturers. The brake disc is fixed to the hub body by six bolts.

Centerlock

This standard is used by Avid and Shimano. The brake disc is fixed at its centre to the hub. The brake disc is pushed onto a cog and then tightened up using a lock ring.
By using an adapter you can use Centerlock hubs with six-hole fixing.

Conventional brake disc sizes

American sizes:

6“ (160mm), 7“ (185mm) 8“ (203mm)
Normally used by Avid.

European sizes:

160mm, 180mm, 203mm
Normally used by Formula, Magura and Shimano

You can use larger brake discs with both American and European sizes if you fit an appropriate adapter. If you opt to use an adapter, one speaks of the so-called Postmount. If the caliper is fitted without an adapter, one speaks of the so-called Direct Mount.

Our development team at Canyon has opted to use a 180 mm Direct Mount system on the new Torque series. This means that no adapter is now required for the torque when using 180 mm brake discs. This saves weight because now only two fixing bolts are needed and not four.

Larger brake discs can also be fitted to the suspension fork with both American and European sizes.

Attention:Ensure when fitting that the fork is approved for use with the relevant brake disc diameter. Failure to do so could result in damage to the fork!

These values are recommended if not other values are given either in the manuals of the manufacturers or printet on the bicycle part. Always mind the instructions of the manufacturers for dismantling and detaching of brakes. Ensure that all screws and bolts are tightened to the correct torque. The correct torque is indicated on the component itself, in the bike manual provided with your new bike, or here in the Technical Support Center.
