Adjusting of front derailleur
Adjusting the front derailleur requires a little skill. You have to use a little trial an error until you find the optimum adjustment. It is therefore advisable to proceed with the adjustment in small steps.
1. Check first whether the chain is worn. You can only perform the adjustment if the chain is in good condition.
2. Then check the height of the front derailleur. Then actuate the shift lever so that the front derailleur moves outwards as far as it can go. When in this position, the lower edge of the outer guide plate must be 1-2 millimeters above the tips of the teeth on the large chain ring. Picture 1 If the front derailleur is in the wrong position, slacken off the bolt slide the front or rear derailleur upwards or downwards on the seat tube as required.
3. Then check the correct lateral position of the front derailleur. Look down on the mechanism from above. The outer guide plate runs exactly parallel to the large chain ring. Picture 2 If the front derailleur is not in the correct position, slacken off the bolt and swivel the mechanism on the seat tube until you achieve the precise position required.
4. Now shift onto the smallest sprocket on the cassette and onto the largest front chain ring. In this position the outer guide plate should be so close to chain that it almost touches it. This is adjusted by H-screw on the front derailleur, which is the outer screw. Please note that sometimes the screws are not marked. If this screw is difficult to turn pull the front derailleur outwards slightly with your hand to relieve pressure on the screw. The chain so close to the inner guide plate that it almost touches it.
5. Now repeat this procedure for the small front chain ring and shift onto the largest sprocket on the cassette. You can restrict how far the front derailleur moves inwards by turning the L-screw, which is the inner screw. Picture 3
6. Now check the cable tension. In this position pull the cable until it’s slightly taught. Picture 4 Picture 5 You can adjust cable tension either via the shift lever on the handlebar or the adjusting screw on the down tube. Now shift onto the next largest front chain ring. If you are unable to do so, it is often the case that there not enough tension on the cable when the chain is on the smallest front chain ring.
7. When using a triple crankset, first shift onto the middle front chain ring and the largest sprocket on the cassette. There should now be a very small clearance between the chain and the inner guide plate. Picture 6 If this is not the case readjust using the adjusting screws via the shift lever on the handlebar or the adjusting screw on the down tube.
